You need to obey me! Yeah, if you have a boss who says this to you I am sure you think about quitting everyday. No one likes to be told from an authority figure you need to obey because of who I am. I catch myself saying things like this to my oldest son Mavrick and then I realize how pathetic it is for me to say “you need to do what I ask because I said so.” Most of the time it is because that is all the ammo I have left but on my good days I ask him a question. Do you love me? The answer is always “yes.” Then we start to talk about his choices and how he can make better ones.
God loves us and He wants what is best for us. A product of love is obedience. In 1 John 5:1-5 we see the connection between love and obedience. What is God asking you to do that you have not been doing? Who do you have in your life that helps you follow Jesus?
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
