Authority resources us to move forward.
It’s interesting how some people are very exclusive with their friendships and other people are inclusive. Exclusive in that their friendships almost feel like a dating relationship. If you spend time with someone else you have cheated on them. They want you exclusively to them self. Someone who is only inclusive in their friendships allows any one into their life. You may never really get to know each other on a serious level. Anyone is welcome and it seems like everyone is their friend. So many times people are one or the other. It creates unhealthy relationships and meaningless interactions. A relationship with Jesus is perfectly both exclusive and inclusive.
Following Jesus is exclusive in that their are some very basic things you have to agree with to follow Him. I think the list is a lot shorter than most of us make it. I also think we are all a work in progress and it’s okay to not have it all figured out. If you choose to fall under His authority he asks for it to be a meaningful relationship. There are some standards He has set for this to work. If you never have standards in a relationship you will never move past moderate chit chat. A relationship with Jesus is inclusive in that anyone is welcome to chose Jesus. It doesn’t matter where you live, who your parents are, what your job is, how much money you make, if you have been to jail, or what your past looks like. It does not matter! You are welcome to step under His authority. You are in! You can follow Jesus!
