Your past will either propel you or paralyze you.

I have met people in my life who have had so many bad things happen to them in the past that it has sabotaged their future. Some of these things are their own fault. It’s hard to recover from a past of bad decision after bad decision. For so many of us, the consequences of our past seem to cripple us from living a full life. But you don’t have to spend your life staring in the rear view mirror.

It’s our choice. We can either let our past propel us or paralyze us. We can beat ourselves up about things that have already happened and are now out of our control, or we can move on. I know that in my own life, I am my own worst enemy. It is so easy for me to judge myself based on my past. The cool thing though is that God does not operate like this. As we read through the Bible, we see verses like this:

““But forget all that—

it is nothing compared to what I am going to do.

For I am about to do something new.

See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?

I will make a pathway through the wilderness.

I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” – Isaiah 43:18-19

God has an amazing future for you no matter what your past looks like. It may not be filled with mansions and expensive cars, but it will be a full life. It will be a life that matters. Our God is the God of do overs, second chances, and even seventy-seventh chances. You can live a new life in Him. You only need to start taking small steps toward Jesus everyday. Before you know it, what looked like an impassable wilderness or a dry wasteland in your life will turn into a beautiful picture of God’s grace. Get your attention off the past and start taking steps forward. You can do it!
