Community is vital to life.
When you go to the doctor’s office, one of the first things the nurse does is check your vital signs. They start by recording your weight and height, and then take you into a room where they check your pulse and blood pressure. This quick inspection gives them a big-picture look at your health and alerts them to any problems that require immediate attention. If they see something out of the ordinary, they will notify the doctor who will use these signs to more effectively diagnose what might be going on. Your vital signs are indicators of your future health. If something is not right with your vital signs now, changes must be made immediately to keep things from getting worse.
Just like physical vital signs, you also have spiritual vital signs – things that give an indication of how you are doing spiritually. Community is one such vital sign. A life lived in community will result in a spiritually healthy you.
If you are not doing well spiritually, you know it. You are filled with anxiety and unrest. You don’t feel close to God. But you can do something about that. The Bible says we can ask God to help us check our spiritual vital signs.
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting. – Psalm 139:23-24
Have you ever checked your spiritual vital signs? When is the last time you allowed your community to bring life giving encouragement into your life? Ask God today to search your heart and show you if there is something you need to change.
