How you think represents WHO you live for.

Have you ever had a bad habit? Nope? Me neither. But I’m sure you have known someone with a bad habit, right? Me too. What are some ways you, I mean they, tried to kick the habit? Maybe they tried to gradually kick the habit slowly over time. Or maybe they tried the “cold-turkey” approach. No matter what they tried, I can guarantee one thing – it wasn’t easy. Getting rid of a habit takes hard work and consistent focus on the goal, and even then, success can be rare.

Those people who are successful tend to say the same thing afterwards. They say something like “I tried and tried, but I didn’t succeed until I finally wanted it, truly wanted it.” What they are saying is that it took a heart change and a mind change to experience success. So often, we try to kick a habit because we know in our heads that it is bad, but deep down inside we still want to do it.

If it’s this hard to stop eating junk food, stop smoking, or start working out, imagine how hard it is to change something that you were born with, something that is a part of you. That something is sin. We were born sinful, and to kick the habit of sin is a life-long battle. Whether you follow Jesus or not, you know how hard this is. Sometimes you do things you know you shouldn’t do, and sometimes things you don’t even want to do. Thankfully, sin isn’t a habit we have to kick on our own.

Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy. – Ephesians 4:22-24

If you follow Jesus, His Spirit will help you renew your mind and help you kick the habit of sin. You aren’t alone! Yes you need to take an active role, trying everyday to get rid of the old you, but as you fight to kick those old habits to the curb, let Jesus help you!
