How would you like to be known more for what you are against than what you are for? There is an organization called Westboro Baptist Church. This small group of people get a lot of press for their picketing, protesting, and boycotting. These people show up at funerals, worship services, festivals, football games, concerts and anywhere where there are people who don’t share the same views as them. They claim to have participated in over 41,000 protests. They show up with signs boldly proclaiming their hate and opposition to everyone they encounter. This is an extreme example but I think it is easy for followers of Jesus to start down this road. When we only promote what God hates and never share what He loves we skew the picture of who God is as He has described Himself in the Bible.

Hate is a strong word. If you say you hate something I am assuming it is absolutely the most terrible thing on the planet. Hate is a word designated for awful things. It is not a word we just throw around. God doesn’t hate people but he does hate certain actions and lifestyles. God loves us sinners but he does not love our sin. He hates sin but loves us so much that he sent his son Jesus to come to earth and pay the penalty for our sin. God loves people and hates sin. God is for the world. God wants us to love people like he loves people. In 1 John 3:14-15 we read that we should love people and that hate is just like murder.

If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.

We all can agree that murder is wrong and can see that hating people is just as wrong. The road to Westboro is filled with hate and harm to the cause of Christ. Sure we should hate sin but we better make sure that people know we love them regardless of their choices. Do the people around you know you more for what you are against than what you are for? Do the people around you know you love them? If they don’t, you are no better than a murderer filled with hate towards people. Make an effort today to show people love and tell them you are for them!
