How you love represents who you love.
“You Christians are all about love. I’m just not sure if love is all you need.” A couple of years ago a guy made this statements to me. I thought it was an interesting statement to make. It is very true if there is anything word you should use to describe a Christian, it should be loving. But love is a word that has a wide variety of meanings. Ask five people what is love and you will get five different answers. Love is one word with a variety of degrees. You can love a candy bar, a tv show, a tree, a dog, and your spouse all at the same time, but the degree that you love each of these is totally different. Love is doing whatever it takes to take care of whatever you love. You probably won’t sacrifice your life for a candy bar but you would for your spouse. To be a follower of Jesus means your life should be defined by love. This sounds nice, but what exactly does this look like?
The Bible gives us a great a practical picture of what it looks like to love people like Jesus loves us:
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Which one of the characteristics stands out to you the most? Is there someone you have been rude to and you need to go show them love? Have you been keeping a scorecard of the number of times someone has hurt you? Have you given up on someone? If are following Jesus, you represent love to the people around you. Are you all about love?
