If you have ever been around a church before you have probably heard the word tithe. The word literally means 10%. Jesus never taught as part of following him you need to tithe 10% of your income to him. This concept of giving 10% of what you produce is and Old Testament principle as a part of the law. In Malachi 3:10 it says
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!
Sounds amazing right give and you get. Here is the reality. Jesus never taught us to religiously give a certain percentage of our income. Did he say not to do it? No. He said sure you can tithe but why do you tithe? Jesus came to free us from the law so that we can live like he lived. Not guided by a list of rules and percentages but guided by the Spirit of God who lives inside of you. It’s relatively easy to write a check or type in your card information on a website. Jesus teaches us you should absolutely give what you produce but don’t just stop there. BE GENEROUS! Give your life, time, talents, abilities, skills, influence, and your stuff.
Start small. Open your eyes and ask God to give you opportunities to be generous. It could be giving a huge tip to a waitress. It could be taking time out of your day to go help someone. It could be writing a check to a friend who is struggling. It could be making a plan to give a percentage of your income to your church or to an organization whose vision is reaching people far from God. Just start!
There is a great book by Bob Goff called “Love Does” it is about living a wildly generous life. Don’t just be 10% generous with your life. Live your life 100% generous!
